Sportshall Athletics is indoor athletics for young people aged between 9 and 15 during the Winter months.  Contact your Club Coach for details at your own club.

The events are similar to Athletics events although altered to fit within two key limitations:

They are run in a Sportshall (Large Gymnasium)
They are for young people to enjoy, participate and develop their athletic capabilities, possibly to continue into later life.

Some Clubs and some Schools participate, though not all.

There are leagues which run from October to February
The results are used to select County representatives who will compete at Regional Finals which are held around February and March
The Winning teams at each Regional event and "UK Best" individuals progress to the National Final which is usually held at the NIA, Birmingham in April

THE EVENTS

League events are for Boys and Girls and usually comprise an appropriate combination of events per age group from those listed below:

Circuit relay
2 Lap Race
4 Lap Race
4 x 2 Lap Relay
4 x 4 Lap Relay
Paarlauf
Shot/Ball Throw
Standing Long Jump
Standing Vertical Jump
Standing Triple Jump

For the full list of events by age group and gender, follow the link....

At Regional Finals the High Jump and 6 Lap are added and Scotland/Northern Ireland have a few variations.  The High Jump has a maximum 10 metre run up area.

Teams compete from Schools and/or Clubs.  At the League stage there are U11, U13 and U15 age groups.  The meetings are fun and very, very noisy.

In case there is any chance that you have the impression that this is not for real athletes, some of our best Athletes participated whilst young and they include:

Jason Gardner
Denise Lewis
Allyn Condon
Sarah Claxton

Some of the Regional finals results are on the Sportshall website, why not visit it now at www.sportshall.org/sha/home/sha.html' or see what is written on the UK Athletics website continue...
