The Welsh run excellent events at the NIAC in Cardiff (UWIC). Sale Harriers are running competitions indoors at Sport City in Manchester. See the Competitions list on this site continue.... The indoor track at the National Indoor Arena (NIA) Birmingham has major events from February to Mid March, including open events, the National Indoor AAA's, Regional Midlands Indoor Championships and Regional Schools indoor meets. In 2007 the European Indoor Championships will be held there. Earlier in the season you will find meets in Windsor, Crystal Palace and the National Indoor Athletics Arena in Cardiff (NIAC) which is on the site of the University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC). With new indoor facilities on full stream, there will be many local indoor events around the Country. There are 6 Indoor facilities that were completed between February 2003 and Spring 2005 - so Indoor seasons will get better. The best way to find out what is going on is to make sure you get "Athletics Weekly" every week. Sportshall AthleticsSportshall Athletics is for everyone aged 9 to 15 and is for fun. Sportshall Athletics comprise a series of events, Track and Field, similar to indoor and outdoor Athletics but that can take place in a large Sportshall. There is specially designed equipment that ensures young people's safety is taken care of and Sportshall, which has been going over 25 year, covers the whole of the UK. Follow the link to their excellent web-site. The events cover U11, U13 and U15 age groups for Boys and Girls. The U11 is non-competitive and the U13/15 has both fun and competitive options. As well as the fun side, there is the development side and there is a National league structure which culminates in Regional and National finals in March and April each year. You usually see most of the top outdoor Athletes at the Regional and National Finals. Many of out top Athletes competed in Sportshall. Some even won the U15 individual prize at the National final - Mark Lewis-Francis and Daniel Caines amongst them. Many top coaches use Sportshall as part of the training programme for up and coming potential International Athletes, although you cannot tell if an Athlete will make it on the International scene until they are around 17-20 years of age. You may even sport some future stars at you own local Sportshall league - I certainly have and know at least two between the ages of 13 and 15 in our local league. It is a fact that more than 60% of National Sportshall Champions go on to represent England and/or GB several time or more. Some are quite well known such as Mark Lewis-Francis and Kelly Sotherton.
